Policy Advisory Council

Since the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers' (ICANN) founding on September 18, 1998 as a not-for-profit, multi-stakeholder organization dedicated to coordinating the Internet's unique domain name system, one of its foundational principles has been to promote competition and choice in the domain name marketplace while ensuring Internet security and stability. New top-level domains (TLDs) such as .sport are leading the way to a more diverse Internet.

In like manner to ICANN's bottom-up, consensus-driven process, the Policy Advisory Council (PAC) has been established to assist dotSport LLC in policy development for the .sport TLD. The PAC is an advisory board made up of representatives from international sports federations, experts from the Internet, media and telecommunications that will act as a forum for the .sport community.

The preparatory meeting of the Council was held at the SportAccord, Athens on June 5th, 2008.

The foundational meeting of the .sport Policy Advisory Council was hosted by dotSport LLC on the opening day of SportAccord Denver '09, the annual gathering of 1300 leading representatives from over 100 international sports federations.

Policy Advisory Council Mandate
  • Domain Name registration policies govern the allocation and administration of domain names. The registry for a particular top-level domain is given the right to set the policies based on ICANN contract. In addition, as per contract, the registry is obliged to honor existing policies as well as any new policies that may be developed within the ICANN community by consensus

  • Notwithstanding the registry's sole responsibility to develop policy for registry.sport - if and when awarded the right to administer the .sport TLD - registry.sport intends to consult the PAC, solicit its views, arrive at a consensus, and then prescribe the policies.

  • The PAC is also intended to be conduit for soliciting community views on the proposed policies as well as initiating appropriate policies, should the need arise.
